RHODE ISLAND AUDITORIUM, North Main Street, Providence - Before the Civic Center this was the place for Concerts, Sports, Professional Wrestling, RI Reds Hockey!
Quite a distance when you didn't have a car! My mom and I took the bus/trolley (remember they had electric (?) lines on the roof ?) to see the Ice Capades. Saw Peter, Paul and Mary there, too. Not a hockey fan !!
The trolleys ran until I was 4, I remember them well. The cobble stones remain below the ash-fault streets and so do the trolley rails. The cyclists still ran down the hill from the old stone bank before the Drive In came.was the cycle race way. The bowling alley was below the bank and Anderson Little which came after the A&P. Of course there was the huge Sears.

My first rock concert @ 15 years old 1970: Elton John opened, then Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night. I remember my dad driving my date and I there from Pawtucket and picking us up after the show. If I'm right, I believe the 2 tickets together was less than $10.00 Also saw many Boston Celtics games there.
I'm from Pawtucket. Only went there once: Saw the Jethro Tull "Aqualung" tour in 1970 (my first rock concert). Also, isn't this the place that the band Boston refers to in their lyrics when they say "Played a roller rink in Rhode Island, man came to the stage one night, smoked a big cigar and drove a cadillac car..."?
I was at the show. Ian Anderson wore what looked like a plaid dark colored bath robe! Also saw Elton John, Three Dog Night, Seals & Croft, C,S & N, Chicago there - all in the early 70s, all tickets were under $6.00. Elton was $3.50!
My Pops took me to RI Reds games there in 70s. Holy moly, cigar smoke and HUGE on-ice fights! Pierre LaBouche, he would say, a ha ha ha ha. Saw Steppenwolf there later, around 82 I think.
Saw Simon and Garfunkle late 60's. Sound was so bad (echo off the back wall), Paul Simon said he wished he could just give everybody headphones and play "Sgt. Pepper".
Saw the Rhode Island Reds and my friend sitting beside me caught a puck!.
Saw the Rhode Island Reds there, and in the 80's saw a Led Zeppelin tribute band. Awesome place. Jimi Hendrix played there. The actual Led Zep might have too.
I met my wife there in 1982 on Valentine's day while there too listen to a Led Zep tribute band. We were the only ones in the place not wearing black leather.
Caught a lot of RI Reds games there back in the 60's. And the Harlem Globetrotters with Meadowlark Lemon. Also saw a Credence Clearwater Revival concert there in 1971 with Bo Diddly as the warm up act.
I remember the plexiglass they finally installed to replace the chicken-wire. It was all different heights as it circled the rink. Was with my brother and a friend for a double-OT playoff game between the Reds and the Boston Braves. Terry O'Relly played for the Braves. A player got checked into the boards in front of us. The Glass was so short there the tip of his stick came over and banged our friend in the top of the head. It drew blood - and a laugh from my brother and me. Kids.
My first concert was Santana around 1970. I also saw Black Sabbath and Ten Years After there. I saw the Kinks at a theater in North Attleboro, nice venue.
My first concert - "Steppenwolf" (Monster Tour) 8/22/69 Then "Black Sabbath" (Master of Reality Tour) 7/22/71 And finally before it closed "Chicago" (Chicago III Tour) 8/13/71 Thank you Mark and Linda for taking me along!
I saw the last three. Chicago played the next day at the Roger Williams Projects. We whipped up some Silver Satin with Kool Aid and went to that one too.
