Burger Chef

BURGER CHEF
An American fast-food restaurant chain that started in 1954
and lasted until 1996. Burger Chef was an American
fast-food restaurant chain founded in 1954 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The chain expanded throughout the United
States, and at its peak, it was second only to McDonald's in the
number of locations nationwide.
The chain was successful in Rhode Island for many years.

"I remember the jingle. "For a nickel and and a dime you get..
french fried potatoes, great thick shakes, and the greatest
fifteen cents, hamburger yet!" Imagine, fifteen cents!!!"

  12. I remember the one on Post rd. It later became the rocky point chowder house. We used to hit the one in Cranston right next to the YMCA. I get a regular burger then take it over to the salad bar and put all sorts of toppings on it. LOL. Thought I could beat the system. My cousins husband used to work at that one. I think there was another one in Warwick right on Warwick Ave on the Cranston/Warwick line across the street from the old Warwick Shoppers World.

  17. We loved the Burger Chef on Rt. 6 in Somerset, best burgers ever! Would go there for lunch, Robert Hall for clothes, Kerr Mill and Arlans in case we didn't find what we wanted in Fall River...a full day of food and shopping. As kids, the exploration of all those buildings was more fun than coming home with bags of stuff...and of course, Burger Chef!

  21. I remember going to the Burger Chef at Park Square, in the late 70’s.
On Wednesdays (?), you could purchase an individual salad bowl/pressed wooden bowl for 50 cents, when you ordered the salad bar.

  23. There was one at 1588 Mineral Spring Ave in North Providence. It was there for many years and when Burger Chef closed, several other businesses moved in and out. It is now a Washington trust bank. I remember that it was very popular.

    1. It was many businesses before it was a Washington Trust bank. I had no idea it was a Burger Chef though. When you said Mineral Spring I just assumed where the McDonald’s is.

That address used to be home to Quikava the short lived but fantastic drive through coffee / beverage / pastry spot. I miss their cookies and bagels like crazy. I did find a giant Quikava coffee mug at Savers a few years ago. I cherish it.

When Quikava went under, it became a Dunkin’ Donuts shortly after Quikava was bought out by Dunkin. That location didn’t last too long I assume because there was another Dunkin’ like a minute or two drive from where that one is.

After that double drive thru location closed, the building itself sat vacant for many years until it was knocked down for the bank at such a bad location!

Not to mention Mineral Spring Ave is littered with Dunkin’ Donuts. It’s become more Dunkin and Banks than houses recently. Thank god for the Chipotle so I don’t have to get Taco Bell anymore lol.

But I had no idea Burger Chef was its predecessor!

    2. I worked at the one in Warwick on Post Road near the airport and Ann & Hope. The cash registers did not add. You had to add the entire order in your head (ex. 3 burgers, 2 fries, and one shake …$1.00 in all) and then key in the $1, There was no tax. I had noticed that whenever I dispensed a Coke, it would come out clear if I pulled the dispenser handle only half way. Pull it out all the way and the brown Coca Cola syrup came out too. One day late at night two drunk guys came up and one asked for water. So. I pulled the Coke handle only half way, filled a cup, and gave it to the customer. He took a drink and then spit it out. He said “I’m from Texas and that is the worst damn water I ever tasted!” Later I found out that I had given him pure seltzer. I lasted there for only 3 weeks before being laid off. My parents must have been happy because they didn’t have to drive me to and from work anymore.

    3. Wow! No adding on the registers back then? I don’t think I could make it in a food / retail customer service position in those times! I’m horrible and I mean HORRIBLE with mental math. Hell, I’m bad with any math period.

would be holding up the lines trying to total everything together, and I’d probably give the wrong change back and tank the whole system haha. My drawer after my shift would be like $70 short. I’m glad modern registers do all the math for us. I can’t imagine being stuck on a register that’s a glorified piggy bank.
