J.J. NEWBERRY'S

J.J. NEWBERRY'S, J.J. Newberry's was an American five and dime
store chain in the twentieth century. Located in Providence - Next Door to Woolworth.
J.J. Newberry's was one of the largest five & dimes in America.
It closed in the early 80's.

  1. This was my favorite store when I was a little girl (early 1960s). The chain closed in the 1980s, but the one downtown closed late 1960s. Broke my heart. The toy department was downstairs, lunch counter, bakery, stationery on the main floor, clothing upstairs. I bought all my Whitman books here: Lassie, the Tuckers series, Donna Parker, Annette, etc., and I still have seven of the eight tiny plastic toy pedigreed dog set they sold there...they were a dime apiece. (Big money in those days: you could get a glass of milk in a restaurant for dime, or a Hershey's candy bar, or a Fudgesicle, or the small size Del's Frozen Lemonade.)

  2. I have very fond memories from my childhood of our shopping days at the J.J. Newberry's store located at the Northgate Shopping Mall in Seattle, Washington. This was in the late 50's and the 60's. I especially loved having lunch at the lunch counter sitting on the stool, enjoying what was called the "Beefy Boy" or "Beefy Burger". That was my absolute favorite lunch there. I wonder if there is any way I can get the recipe for that delicious "Beefy Boy?"

  3. Anyone remember the Newberry's in Newport? It was open for years after the downtown store closed. Eventually they sold a lot of "beachy" stuff, but Mom stopped by there every time we were in Newport to get her favorite lipstick.

There was also a Newberry's in East Greenwich that was still open after the downtown store closed. I remember stopping there once looking for Mom's lipstick.

    1. Yes, I remember it. I bought a long sleeveless T-shirt there, it was supposed to be a beach cover-up but I wore it as a nightgown instead. Had a little logo near the shoulder that said "Newport, RI" (that was in the days when it was perfectly acceptable to buy and wear articles of clothing that said "Newport, RI" when you were a native Newporter). I had that T-shirt for years until the material in the shoulder finally wore out.

    3. Barbara, I also worked there, my first job, in '74 and met my husband. I was 16, he was 18. He worked in the shoe dept and also swept the floors at night. Remember Mr. Pack and Mr. Reilly? Was your mother's name Mary? I worked in the jewelry dept at night. I am trying to remember a Barbara. I also worked as a cashier.

  5. I now work in an office building where the first J.J Newberry's was in Stroudsburg, PA. My father when I was a child was a regional manager for McCory's stores another company that had purchased JJnewberry's at some point and continued operating many still under the name for many years. I can remember playing in the stock room and the basement of that building as my Dad was good friends with the manager of that that store. Its still a great old building even if its not a five and dime anymore.

  7. I worked at the headquarters of jj newberry at 245 Fifth ave in NY City around 1955/ 1957. It was a very nice place to work. My job allowed me to be familiar with everyone, Including all the buyers and all the Newberry family. All were extremely nice people. At that time, I think they had only one store in NY City. I believe it was located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Some people refered to the store as the one in der pernt. Good times were had by all.

  8. My name is Allen. I worked as the Assistant Manager at JJ Newberrys in Warwick RI in 1981. My boss was Rod Frazier. I remember the lunch counter and the many customers who would stop for a coke or cup of coffee. I worked with many nice people. Some had worked for the store for thirty years. It's a part of America that is gone forever. The five and dime was part of the culture in a happier time.

  9. Anyone know when Newberry opened in Providence? I have an old 8mm my dad took in Providence and I'm trying to date it. Looks like in the late 30's early 40's. My dad joined the service in mid 1942 before heading to Europe. for Thanks, Paul
