CITY LIGHTS NIGHTCLUB,
Located in Davol Square Market Place,Providence, in the 80’s and early 90’s,
(closed around 1990-91). It was the hottest night spot to be seen at.
It had an outdoor bar with fabulous lighting (something out of a movie scene)
serving all kinds of special drinks & foods with live bands and D.J. music.
When the Davol Market Place retailers did not live up to expectations, the crowds
started to dwindle and most of the stores were forced to close. In turn, the local star
studded night spot sadly went out of business. If you never went to City Lights
you’ve never seen the coolest place in town.
All the local celebrities went to this hot spot.

a blast from the past... used to frequent the 'lights' since opening it's door in 1983..for many years.... was a 'happening venue'...

My family owned it.
ReplyDeleteDwindled? I thought that Davol Square merchants were forced out by greedy landlords who kept upping the rent. Many moved to Garden City.
ReplyDeleteI waited tables there.
ReplyDeleteI used to work catering events for John and Kinney, who opened City Lights, as well as Down Under in Warwick
ReplyDeleteDamn autocorrect! Kenny
DeleteI was the chef there, with Billy my sous.
ReplyDeleteKenny Gootkin and Marc Blazar...gave me my first macrobiotic hippie indoctrination on a cross country trip to a eastern-food/philosophy festival in Auburn, CA. 1974 I think it was? We stayed near Haight Ashbury in with Herman Aihara, successor to George Osawa, founder of macrobiotics in the west. The great food prep quality and tradition learned from all of them continues in family today; we still cut our carrots the yin/yang way and make gomasio. Thanks Kenny; thanks Marc !
