The store in Newport on Bellevue Avenue had 2 floors. I used to take all my babysitting money and spend it all on clothes since they had a teenage department.
Cherry's two floors in Newport consisted of the main floor and the basement which only had a credit office and women's size dresses and aprons.I was a key employee who opened that store and worked there for about 9 years. I was parking my car in the front one day when the manager(Al Stuttard) approached me ad asked if I had heard the latest, and I replied no, what? He said the president was shot in Texas a little while ago. I asked okay, what is the punch line? It was then when I heard of Kennedy's Assasination, and you could see the spire of the church he and Jackie were married in above the roof line of Cherry & Webb's. They were the fun days, and I remeber well the owners and at Christmas would decorate Mrs. Gross,(formerly Anna Cherry) house with Christmas lights and trim.
It felt pretty good when at noon we would sit in her living room on Poppasquash Point and be served a nice lunch and shoot the breeze with her. I also spent a few nights baby=sitting the Prov store after Hurricane Carol's visit in 1954, sleeping in the presidents office on his leather couch. I remember we were threatened a feww years following the devastation of Hurricane Carol, with many other storms coming up the coast. I can tell many stories of Chery & Webbb's in New England, and all the fun times with our summer outings and other events.
My first name is Dana, and everyone connected with Cherry's in those days will remember me.
I loved shopping at Cherry and Webb in Newport R.I. Our family use to live on King st. right behind the Almacs shopping center. That was way back in the 60s and 70s. Brings back such good memories. Michele

Back in the very early 90s when I left one of my jobs (it was a temp job) one of my bosses gave me a $25 Cherry & Webb gift coin and the other boss gave me a $50 Cherry & Webb gift coin. Right after that the Newport store (probably the others too) announced they were going out of business and they were having a sale on everything in stock. I purchased a real nice $125 jacket there (which I still have and wear to this day) for about $25!
There was one in Lincoln RI. It was later a Pay/Half (The interior of the Pay/Half in Licoln was burned in flames in 2007), It was converted into Five Below shortly after in 2008.
So that’s what happened to Pay/Half! I always wondered where it went. I liked their clothes. I don’t go in Five Below much since it’s essentially a playground for middle school kids to run wild in. I did find a neat disco ball for $5 a couple months back. But I miss Pay/Half. Sucks about the fire, wonder if it was accidental…
I used to go here with my mom, grandma, and sister at the Lincoln Mall location. I would often try to leave to go to KB Toys next door, but many times I ended up just hiding in one of the circular clothes racks. Talk about a demon seed!
This is Princess Stephanie Floydd Jr Sr also known as Kelley R Liberty .My pay from you and KB Toys etc has been stolen and it's urgent and court ordered that I retrieve it.Kindly Rsvp.
Cherry and Webb was my first real job way back in 1962.I was in my early twenties and stayed there for about three years. I worked in the handbag department and eventually rose to supervisor -- of one other person!! I also was responsible for keeping our area tidy and having the shelves full all while being a salesperson. It was a good lesson. My pay was a huge $1.15 an hour! It was a good intro to the working world.
A few years back when we still had our landline phone. One morning the phone rang, and I checked the Caller ID before answering the call. No lie, the CID read “Cherry and Webb.” I have no idea how that is even possible since they’ve been gone for over 30 years!
Also, no it wasn’t some weird spooky time travel phone call. It wasn’t a Cherry & Webb manager in 1986 was calling to say I’m late for my shift. I think it was one of those *HOOOOOONK!* “this is your captain speaking! You’ve won a cruise to the Bahamas!” Scams.
Id. Much rather prefer the time travel phone call haha.
Jinngle was: "There's Nothing Like Cherry & Webb"
